French Moderns

The Columbia Museum of Art brings a century of revolutionary French art to life with "French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950". Featuring masterworks by artists like Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, and Marc Chagall, this traveling exhibition from the Brooklyn Museum explores a period of bold innovation and transformation. This groundbreaking era in art history, defined by movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Fauvism, showcased creativity that was often experimental, daring, and divisive. The campaign identity reflected this spirit while engaging the museum’s modern and diverse audience.

Project Details

Created as part of the Cyberwoven team, the campaign’s visual identity drew inspiration from the energy and audacity of the art it celebrated. A hand-drawn, figurative hyphen was used as a recurring design element, symbolizing the creativity and exploration that defined this era of modernism. The typography balanced a sense of historical depth with contemporary relevance, reflecting the tension between classic traditions and avant-garde experimentation. With a wealth of assets to work with, we allowed the artworks to take center stage. Abstract collages were created to emphasize the variety of styles, techniques, and subjects within the exhibition, reinforcing the show’s diversity and richness. The visual identity was created primarily for the digital marketing campaign, but lives physically in the typography selections found throughout the exhibition space.
